Recognizing Women in Pest Control
Annually in March, The Pest Posse recognizes Women in Pest Control. This series was conceived by the Culley Christian, the visionary and creator at The Pest Posse. Why March? Why a Women in Pest Control series?
First off, why March? Because every year, March is designated Women's History Month by presidential proclamation. The month honors women's contributions to American history.
However, Women's History Month started as Women's History Week. A week that began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a Women's History Week in 1978. The week of March 8 was chosen to correspond with International Women's Day. The movement then spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women's History Week celebrations the following year.
In 1980, a consortium of women's groups and historians led by the National Women's History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance) successfully lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8, 1980, as National Women's History Week.
In March, National Women's History Week continued until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as "Women's History Month." Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women's History Month. Since 1995, each President has issued an annual proclamation designating the month of March as "Women's History Month."
By 1986, 14 states had already declared March as Women's History Month. This momentum and state-by-state action were used as the rationale to lobby Congress to declare the entire month of March as National Women's History Month. This effort led to Congress declaring March as National Women's History Month in 1987.
Why a Women in Pest Control series? This series was created to recognize the growing presence of women in the pest control industry and their contributions to the male-dominated field of pest control. This series, released annually in March, recognizes four women who work in the pest control industry as service technicians, business owners, manufacture representatives, and managers. The women selected for this recognition have a true passion and dedication to the pest control industry. So in 2018, The Pest Posse created the Women in Pest Control series, and March was chosen to correspond with Women’s History Month.
Starting March 7, 2022, with the sponsorship of Nisus Corporation and Target Specialty Products, The Pest Posse will be releasing the fifth annual Women in Pest Control recognition series. The series will start with a live stream that will include an interview with our first 2022 Women in Pest Control recognition. Then every Monday throughout March, a new recognition interview will be released. These interviews will be available as part of the free Pest Posse TV membership and available on all major podcast platforms.
As a special bonus, each Thursday in March, The Pest Posse will release a highlight episode of the women in pest control that were recognized in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. These episodes will only be available as part of the free Pest Posse TV membership.
